In the early 1970s the Canadian government of Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau implemented a plan to improve the movement of grains, specifically wheat and barley across North America and for overseas shipment. Part of this initiative was an enormous government financial investment to produce new grain cars for the Canadian Wheat Board, a Crown-controlled entity. The result was the 100-ton 4550 cu ft cylindrical grain cars that have been seen across the continent for over 50 years. Three Canadian builders, National Steel Car, Hawker-Siddeley (Canada), and Marine Industries Limited were awarded lucrative contracts to manufacture the cars, of which hundreds were built. Volume 1 of this series focuses on the grain-carrying variation of these cars.
