PULLMAN STANDARD PS-1 BOXCAR PACK

Introduced following the success of the original 40-foot version launched in 1947, the 50-foot PS-1 boxcar became an iconic staple of North American rail freight transportation. Manufactured by Pullman-Standard, the PS-1 series was revolutionary for its heavily standardized, all-welded steel construction, which replaced older riveted designs to increase durability and reduce manufacturing costs. The 50-foot interior length provided extra cubic capacity over its 40-foot predecessor, making it ideal for hauling general merchandise, paper products, and bulk packaged goods across major railroads. Throughout its long production run from the late 1940s into the 1970s, the design evolved to feature various door configurations—including single, double, and plug doors made by suppliers like Youngstown or Pullman-Standard—along with options for cushion underframes and specialized interior load-restraint systems. Highly versatile and widely adopted across dozens of railroads, the 50-foot PS-1 remains one of the most recognizable freight cars in American railroad history.
