SD40T-2 ENGINE PACK:  SOUTHERN PACIFIC HERITAGE

The EMD SD40T-2 is a 3,000-horsepower, six-axle diesel-electric locomotive built by General Motors Electro-Motive Division (EMD) between 1974 and 1980 for the Southern Pacific (SP) railroad and its subsidiary, the Denver & Rio Grande Western. Commonly known as a "Tunnel Motor" due to its distinctive cooling system modifications designed specifically to prevent overheating in the long, poorly ventilated tunnels and snowsheds of the American West, this locomotive features extended radiator intakes and a distinctive low-mounted rear radiator fan. These design changes allowed the locomotive to pull heavy freight through demanding mountainous terrain without stalling, making it a legendary and reliable workhorse for Southern Pacific operations.

This product includes a mix of engines with 88" and 123" nose lengths, as well as with the as-delivered 1970's  'L' window, and the modified 80's version after the 'L' window was removed.  These locomotives would be right at home in circa 1970's/80's activities on the SP Shasta Route.
