SD45T-2 ENGINE PACK:  SOUTHERN PACIFIC HERITAGE

Southern Pacific’s unique Tunnel Motor series of locomotives began in the early 1970’s with the SD45T-2.  Delivered between 1972 and 1975, Southern Pacific (SP), and the St. Louis Southwestern Railway (SSW) ordered just shy of 250 units.  Affectionally known as Tunnel Motors, the ‘T’ after the SD45 model number represents the modification to the radiators to allow for better cooling when in tunnels.  These locomotives were in service right up to the merger with the Union Pacific in 1996.  Following the merger, a small number stayed with the UP, and the remainder were purchased by other railroads.

This product includes two versions of the SD45T-2 prototype.  The as-delivered 1970's version with the 'L' window, and the modified 80's version after the 'L' window was removed.
