Introduced by General Motors' Electro-Motive Division in 1966, the 1,500-horsepower EMD SW1500 was a powerhouse switcher that bridged the gap between traditional yard engines and light road-switchers with its rugged 12-cylinder EMD 645E engine. Built on a compact 44-foot frame, its high tractive effort and optional road trucks made it adaptable for everything from heavy industrial switching to local freight duties. This versatility proved critical across the Eastern rail network, where lines like the Louisville & Nashville and Seaboard Coast Line deployed SW1500 fleets to handle busy industrial corridors and major classification yards. When CSX Transportation was formed through the mid-1980s mergers of these Chessie System and Seaboard System predecessors, it inherited a diverse roster of SW1500s. Renumbered into the CSX 1100-series, these dependable workhorses served for decades across Eastern marine terminals, manufacturing hubs, and sprawling yards—bearing testament to the durable lineage of CSX’s fallen-flag ancestors well into the modern diesel era.
