Introduced by General Motors' Electro-Motive Division in 1966, the 1,500-horsepower EMD SW1500 was a powerhouse switcher that bridged the gap between traditional yard engines and light road-switchers by introducing the rugged 12-cylinder EMD 645E engine. Built on a compact 44-foot frame, its combination of high tractive effort and optional road trucks (such as Flexicoils) made it adaptable for everything from heavy industrial switching to local branchline freight duties. This versatility proved critical for major Western lines: the Southern Pacific became the largest buyer of the model, assembling a massive fleet of 240 units to handle sprawling yards and intense port traffic throughout California and the Southwest. While the Western Pacific acquired a small roster of just three SW1500s, they proved indispensable for urban industrial switching around the San Francisco Bay Area. Union Pacific, which initially inherited switchers through its 1982 merger with WP and Missouri Pacific, eventually absorbed SP's massive fleet in 1996, relying on the dependable SW1500s across its expanded transcontinental network for decades before retiring them to shortlines and museums. This product includes models covering the Southern Pacific, Union Pacific and Western Pacific prototypes.
